Battle of the Sample Boxes: Ipsy Vs. Birchbox

Ipsy (formerly known as MyGlam) stepped it up a notch this month! They not only delivered earlier than normal (last month was late), but the bag was amazing. Here is the lowdown:

*$10 a month
*It was started by Michelle Phan (who is a Youtube Beauty Guru)
*Every month you receive a make-up bag with deluxe samples and full sized products
My October bag:

*Pequi Oil Treatment from Couture Colour (15ml = $12)
*The Balm "What's Your Type?" "the body builder" Mascara ($19 for 12ml, 3.5ml =$5.54)
*mirenesse lip bomb (full size: $35.10)
*Coastal Scents Eyeshadow quad (set 7)(unknown value, they are selling a palette of 12 for $5, so estimating it at $2)
*be a...bombshell eyeliner in Onyx (full size: $14)
*Chevron black/white and red makeup bag (unknown value)
Total Value: $68.64

Initial Thoughts: Wow! This bag was awesome. While some of the products became less desirable after using them, this was still a great bag. I was excited for all the items I received. I was particularly happy to see a Sephora brand (The Balm). I have used several products from The Balm and loved most of them. This mascara rocks and is the best sample box mascara I have received yet. The hair oil smells amazing and I have been really into hair oils recently. The mirenesse lip bomb is pretty amazing. It is a little darker than what I normally wear, but I can rock it occasionally. It is sort of a combination of a lip gloss, lipstick and lip stain. I would buy it again if it wasn't ridiculously priced. The eyeliner didn't work well for me last night when I used it. I was however in a rush, so I will try it again. The eyeshadow was disappointing after application. It looked so pretty and purple in the palette, but it went on faint and PINK. Overall, I am extremely happy with Ipsy this month.

*$10 a month
*Created by Harvard Grads
*You receive 4-5 "deluxe samples" every month, occasionally full sized products
*You get bonus points for answering short surveys about the products you receive. You can then use those points to buy products at the their store (i.e.: FREE Stuff!)
 -My October box:

*Embryolisse Lait-Creme Concentre 24 hour Miracle Cream ($16 for full size, 2x 2ml packets, unknown value, est. less than $1)
*Lulu Organics- Lavender + Clary Sage Hair Powder (4oz for $30, 5g = 0.176oz = $1.32)
*Karuna- Hydrating Treatment Masks (4 masks= $28, 1 mask =$7)
*Naked Princess- Naked Shine Luscious Lip Gloss (0.10oz for $26, 0.008oz=$2.08)
*Luna LemonZest Bar ($18.75 for 15, 1 bar= $1.25)
Total Value: about $12.65

Initial Thoughts: WTF? I have heard people say that they only receive "foil packets" from Birchbox, but this is the first time I have not received at least 2-3 decent sized samples. The lip gloss is super tiny & most of it is a wand. There is literally not more than 4 uses in here. The hand cream packets are a joke. The hair powder sounds cool, but I will only be able to use it once with the sample I received. So really I have one facial mask and a Luna bar (which I will eat, but don't really like).  Not Happy Birchbox, not happy at all. This is the first month I am seriously considering dropping them. They have been disappointing for a few months and this month is awful. I would not spend $10 for the crap they sent. I wouldn't even spend the $5 that I paid if you count my $5 in points.

This months winner: Do you have to even ask? Ipsy was amazing and Birchbox sucked. Ipsy, hands down wins.
