Battle of the Sample Boxes: Ipsy Vs. Birchbox January

Here is the lowdown for January:

*$10 a month
*It was started by Michelle Phan (who is a Youtube Beauty Guru)
*Every month you receive a make-up bag with deluxe samples and full sized products
My January bag:

*Pacifica Tuscan Blood Orange Mini Body Butter ($7 for this 2.5oz size)
*Nailtini Nail Lacquer in Bloody Mary (Full Size! $13)
*Josie Maran 100% Pure Argan Oil ($48 for 50ml, 5ml= $4.80)
*Sexy Hair- Big Sexy Hair Spray and Play (Travel Size) ($6)
*London Soho New York Crease Brush ($8.13 on Amazon)
*Ipsy Makeup bag (unknown value)
Total Value before makeup bag: $38.93

Initial Thoughts: I knew this bag was going to be awesome when I felt how heavy it was. I was most excited for the body butter and the Argan Oil. I don't really NEED either of them, but I was happy to try them. I initially dismissed the London Soho brush because the last one they sent me was really cheap, but this one is NICE. It says on Amazon that it is from their "professional" line. I will definitely use it. Nailtini is a great brand and I actually have never owned bright red nail polish, so I was happy to have it. The Sexy Hair hairspray is actually what I used for my wedding and it felt stiff and didn't hold my hair with the humidity. Due to that fact and the fact that I rarely use hairspray, I never even used the rest of the $17 full size bottle I had bought for the occasion. I'll toss it into my travel bag with my flat iron and we will see if it ever gets used. Overall, a great bag. The bag itself is awesome too. It seems like Ipsy keeps improving on the quality of them (the very first ones smelled fishy...yuck).

*$10 a month
*Created by Harvard Grads
*You receive 4-5 "deluxe samples" every month, occasionally full sized products
*You get bonus points for answering short surveys about the products you receive. You can then use those points to buy products at the their store (i.e.: FREE Stuff!)
my January box:

*theBalm Cosmetics- Hot Mama ($20 for 7.08gm, 1.0 gm= $2.82)
*Harvey Prince - Skinny Chic ($55 for 50ml, no size on sample, est. value $1)
*rahua Shampoo and Conditioner (one set of regular, one set of voluminous)($32/$34 for 9.3oz, 0.68oz shampoo= $2.34, 0.54oz conditioner= $1.97, total = $4.31)
* Eyeko - Skinny Liquid Eyeliner in black ($15 for 0.07oz, 0.04oz= $8.57)
*pur-lisse - pur-moist hydra-balance moisturizer ($55 for 1.7oz, 0.5oz= $16.18)
Total value: $32.88

Initial Thoughts: Finally a decent Birchbox! I originally thought that the Eyeko and Hot Mama were full size. I was kind of bummed to see that they weren't. In all reality though they will last me a long time. I was just happy to have some decent sized samples this time. I hate that they sent me another perfume, but at least it is Harvey Prince. It is a brand I love, use and will buy. The Skinny Chic smells awesome. The pur-lisse moisturizer feels amazing; but the price is ridiculous. I haven't tried out the rahua shampoo and conditioner yet, but I am excited to. Even the sample packages feel silky. Overall, I am pretty happy with my Birchbox and it definitely justifies the $10 for me.

This month's winner: For once Birchbox was actually a consideration, but the winner is still Ipsy. Just look at the sizes of everything I received!

Thanks for the great reviews. I had cancelled my birchbox a few months ago but now I may have to try Ipsy as it looks like better samples!
