Battle of the Sample Boxes: Ipsy Vs. Sample Society {June 2013}

My subscription boxes have been coming early recently. Here is what I received for June:

*$10 a month
*It was started by Michelle Phan (who is a Youtube Beauty Guru)
*Every month you receive a make-up bag with deluxe samples and full sized products
 My June bag:

*Freeman Beauty Psssst! The TRUE Original Dry Shampoo (travel size= $2.99)
*Chella Ivory Lace Highlighter Pencil (full size= $18)
*J.Cat BeautySparkling Cream Palette ($4.49)
*NYX Rouge Cream Blush ($6)
*Starlooks Lip Pencil ($12)
*Referral Bonus: Baublebar Bracelet (this was listed for around $20, but has been removed from the site)
Total Value before Makeup and bonus Bag: $43.48

Initial Thoughts: Is it sad that I was jumping up and down over the travel sized cheap dry shampoo? This stuff is awesome and I literally ran out of my last travel size bottle of Psssst! last week. I was also really excited for the Chella Highlighting Pencil and the NYX Blush. I'm not a huge lip liner fan since my lips lack definition and I can't seem to figure out where to define them....but, this liner is a nice neutral color. I am going to give it a try. I thought the J.Cat Palette was pretty and loved the colors until I found out it's not eyeshadow. Apparently it is body glitter. I don't really have much use for body glitter. I will probably give it to my friends preteen daughter. As far as the bonus goes, this bracelet is CHEAPO looking. I can't believe that they sell it for $20+. I probably won't wear it and haven't decided what to do with it yet. It will probably tarnish shortly after someone wears it. I wish I had received another Urban Decay shadow instead. Ohh well.

Sample Society (Please use code TFL99 if you sign up)
*$15 a month
*Creation of Allure and Beauty Bar
*5 deluxe-sized samples
*$15 gift code to redeem on a $50 purchase - when any product from the brands you've sampled is included in your order.
*Expert beauty advice to accompany your samples from the editors of Allure
My June box:

*Stila Cosmetics Sheer Color Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20 in Fair ($34 for 1.7oz, 0.17oz= $3.40)
*Stila Cosmetics Lip Glaze in Grapefruit ($22, I think I received full size, but can't verify)
*Illume Desert Tulip Tin ($33.50 for full size, I received a small 1oz tin unknown value)
*Murad Age Reform AHA/BHA Exfoliating Cleanser ($35 for 6.75oz, 1oz= $5.19)
*Philosophy Hope in a Jar ($40 for 2oz, 0.4oz= $8)
Total Value before Candle Tin: $38.59

*Initial Thoughts: Yay, Stila!! I am not fond of tinted moisturizer, but I LOVE Stila lip products. This gloss is so pretty and works out great with my OCC lip tar. I am giving the tinted moisturizer another shot. I was excited for the candle, but it smells a little too flowery for me. I hope my Mom likes it. I already have (and don't use) Philosophy's Hope in a Jar, so I will probably send that to Mom too. The Murad Exfoliating Cleanser is awesome! I have been using it like crazy and I love the way it doesn't make my skin dry, but it makes it feel super clean.

*This Month's Winner: Honestly, neither box blew me away this month (ohh I becoming a beauty snob?). I would have to say Sample Society won even though they had the lesser overall value. I received all name brand products and a candle in Sample Society. The Ipsy brands were cheaper brands and the products were things that I would not buy (except that dry shampoo! You really have to try it!). In the end I will be using 3 products fully from each box that add up to $27 for Ipsy and a little over $30 for Sample Society. Still well worth my money. What did you get in your boxes?

These kinds of things would have been fun when I was younger and hadn't yet settled into products that work for me - and it probably would have helped me to find working products much more quickly!!

I like these, they are fun to receive in the mail. However sometimes they don't have things that you are looking for or need. I do like the idea however. Thanks.

I've been hearing a lot about the beauty boxes lately. I've tried Blismo Box, which is a bit of everything but they are all natural and/or organic. I LOVED that box but I had to give it up when I stopped working.
